When in doubt – google the question.    How *do* you go about getting two sims married in The Sims 3 ?     The answer is stated nicely here.   I’ve simply not been persistent enough in using the romantic options.

And so I persevered, until I talked Constance into breaking up with her “partner”, even though she’s been woo-hooing with Tom.     Ronny, the boyfriend, now hates me completely.   The next day, it was time to pop the question.

She said yes.

Tom waited until he had a four day weekend and they had a private wedding ceremony.   I wanted to have the full on wedding, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it and lost patience.    Where *would* be a good spot for marriage – probably a gazebo park, right ?   I didn’t find anything I could click on that would let them have a ceremony.

And a mere two days after marriage, and Tom knocked up Constance.

Apparently, you get several days of paid time off when you become pregnant, so I got used to playing Constance during that time.    She’s now employed in the Law Enforcement career, but what she really wants to do is write novels, and I’ve let her go to town with that.

Tom Scrabble begins his new task – finding a wife.     After getting rejected by the policewoman, he gets a surprise call from Constance Shelley who wants to come over…… and things work out pretty well.

She’s just sleeping over. Really.

I spend some additional time with her, but I can’t seem to get to the point of proposing, or going steady, or moving in.    I’m guessing it’s because she’s officially in a relationship.     So I figured, I’d keep trying, but also chase after a single girl.

Yeah, no additional options after Woo Hoo either.

Where does a bookworm sim go to meet women ?   Well, the library of course.

She’s cute, but she has a funny ugly deep voice.

Eventually I met what’s-her-name and started working on her as well.

Are you marriage material ?    Maybe not if I can’t remember your name.

She’s been over to the house and been flirty, but I had to give up for the night before I got her near 100% relationship bar.

 

 

From Poorman to Mating Season

After a few days of working hard, Tom Scrabble is able to afford a new appliance – a refrigerator !

It’s not much, but it’s home.

The Culinary track is set up perfectly for this Sim and his situation.    He traveled to the library to read up and get Cooking skill; the gym is nearby and he showers there; and he just heads over to friends and co-workers houses to chat them up and get better job performance.     And of course, the Crosbys next door are invaluable given Odin is a co-worker, and they have a toilet, a TV, and let me use them.

Steady work, and steady income, let him build up something approaching a studio apartment.

With the necessities of life out of the way, it’s time to think about getting married and passing on your genes.    So the next goal was to make the house more like, well, an actual house.     You know – you want a separate bathroom, bedroom, and perhaps family room/ kitchen.     With a place like that, I could probably manage to attract a woman and get married.

Given that this is a game, probably any woman would do for Tom.     Saving up for the perk that makes you more fertile !

So now I have a pretty ugly house, but with the critical things he’ll need in order to attract a mate.    Double bed – separate bathroom – kitchen/family room.      In the days that have passed, Constance Shelley went and got married, so she’s not the best choice.     I’m thinking the first thing for Tom to do is find a single woman – there have to be some in this town.    I can always make some, if all else fails.     And I doubt there’s much preventing me from stealing another guys wife…….

After achieving all this, the sim still has over 100 days of “young adult” life ahead of him, so I think the Epic time setting is exactly what I needed to enjoy the process of families in this game.    What I remember from long ago, is that the kids grew up, literally, before I could even figure out what was happening.    So we’ll see if that trend is reversed with the change in timeframe, instead of immortality.

 

Legacy Family Challenge

While browsing through my blogroll, I came upon Stargrace’s post about a “Legacy Family” in the Sims 3.    What on earth is that you ask ?    You can read the linked post, or accept my summary, which is it’s a player-conceived challenge to see how well you can do through 10 generations of sims with limited funds to start with.    Apparently, all you get is a mere $1,300 simoleons.

The idea appeals to me.    Anything about managing money always appeals to me. My previous Sims3 experiences were limited to building up an amazingly successful couple using immortality, and of course a modern-day immortal Lothario with an entire harem of women he slept with.   Eternally.   Until I got bored with the whole thing, and never logged in again.

But, the game is still installed on my hard drive.    And so, the first (hopefully!) generation guy, Tom Scrabble, is born.    Tom is a bookworm, a natural cook, and a couch potato.    And the game settings are moved to Epic; which apparently means sims live for 960 game days.    This should be fun.

Starting off – but far too wealthy.

Apparently the first challenge is getting rid of enough money so the poor sucker only has $1,300.    I think I’ll start by selling pieces of the house.

That’s better. His lot is now worth $1,300.

This means, of course, I need to get rid of all of his money.    He has about $14,000 dollars.    This shouldn’t be hard right ?   Just buy, then sell, a bunch of stuff.

Well, that doesn’t work as well as I’d have hoped.     I bought a $1,200 dollar couch, unpaused it for a second, and sold it for $1,020.     After a number of times buying (at first) expensive art, and ending with buying the cheapo TV’s, I successfully got him down to $313.    That’s just going to have to do, it’s painful trying to get rid of money – it took an hour of game time and a ton of clicking to get this far.

To start off, I blew the entire $300 on a bed sitting on my bare lot.    Then, got a job in the Culinary track, and went to visit the neighbors.

The Crosbys live across the street, and Tom met Constance Shelley – An unemployed woman who’s a bookworm just like him.    Is she married ?   Turns out, she’s not.    She’ll be a marriage target, and we’ll need to marry Tom off if he wants to have any offspring.

For the moment, though, it’s time to be a rampant careerist and earn, and earn, and earn.   Without a decent house there’s no way to take care of a family.    Just like in real life.
